Teeth Cleanings, Exams & X-Rays

Regular cleanings and exams are essential for your oral health. One of our hygienists will begin with a brief oral exam, then will begin taking any necessary x-rays. We recommend that all new patients have x-rays at BORO Dental Arts.

Next, your gums and teeth will be cleaned to remove plaque and tartar. Your hygienist will polish your teeth and floss between them to remove any remaining particles and debris. Then, the doctor will examine your gums and teeth, and assess your overall oral health. She will discuss her findings with you and address any issue, then let you know any next steps you may need to take.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments can be administered as part of a standard teeth cleaning. The doctor will simply apply a fluoride-rich paste or gel to your teeth, leave it in place for a few minutes, then rinse it away. Fluoride has the unique ability to remineralize and strengthen teeth that have been weakened by minor decay. With regular fluoride treatments, your teeth will remain strong and cavity-free.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants consist of a special, liquid resin that is applied to your rear teeth after a cleaning. After it’s been applied, Dr. Lau will use an LED light to harden it into a clear, strong barrier. This barrier prevents cavities, since it stops food, bacteria, and acid from touching your enamel directly. When properly applied and maintained, this protection can last for up to 10 years.

Periodontal Care

Periodontal treatment is recommended to help treat periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is typically caused by inadequate brushing and flossing which allows plaque—a film of bacteria—to build up on the teeth and harden, also known as calculus or tartar, and cause sore, bleeding gums and bone loss. In advanced stages, periodontal disease can lead to loose teeth, painful chewing problems, and even tooth loss.

The first step in treating gum disease is a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing.  During this treatment, we will clean between your teeth and gums to remove plaque and tartar. Then, the roots of your teeth will be smoothed to destroy bacteria buildup. Combined with localized antibiotics, this is the best option for treating most minor-to-moderate cases of gum disease.

Oral Cancer Screenings

As part of every routine cleaning and oral exam, we offer oral cancer screenings. When we perform our examinations, Dr. Lau isn't just looking for cavities. She's also inspecting your gums, tongue, cheeks and the entire oral cavity. We look for any lesions, bumps, discolored patches of tissue or other such issues in your mouth, providing you with peace of mind. In the rare case that we find an area of concern, we will refer you to have a biopsy performed and ensure that you can get any further care you might need.
