Understanding Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that involves correcting the position and alignment of the teeth, as well as the position of the bite and the jaw. Typically, orthodontic treatment is recommended if you have crooked teeth, or if you have an underbite, overbite, crossbite, or another type of malpositioning.

In the past, traditional metal braces were the only method of straightening the teeth with orthodontics, and they are still used to correct cases of severe orthodontic problems due to their versatility. However, modern orthodontic treatments like Invisalign and ClearCorrect do not involve wearing traditional braces at all. Instead, you’ll wear a series of clear plastic aligners that will gently reposition your teeth without braces.

These types of clear aligner treatments are more convenient, faster, and more comfortable compared to traditional braces, but can only be used to treat patients with mild-to-moderate orthodontic problems.

Do I Need Orthodontic Care?

If you have crooked or crowded teeth, gaps in your smile, or bite problems, you may need orthodontic care. In the short-term, problems like crooked teeth can be hard to clean and can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

In the long term, crooked teeth and a malpositioned bite can also cause increased wear and tear on your teeth. This wears down the enamel and weakens your teeth, making them more prone to breakage.

If you are unhappy with your smile or if you think that you may have a serious orthodontic problem like an overbite, orthodontic care might be right for you. The best thing to do is to schedule an orthodontic consultation. The doctor will examine you and help you understand your options for correcting your smile and your bite.

What Should I Expect at My First Visit?

If you are interested in an orthodontic consultation, contact us today! Your first visit will be simple and straightforward. First, your teeth will be cleaned and you’ll get a comprehensive oral exam to ensure that your mouth is healthy.

Then, the doctor will assess your bite and your tooth position. She may take x-rays, impressions of your teeth using dental putty, and pictures of your mouth. Using this information, she will be able to determine the extent of your orthodontic issues.

Once she has examined your mouth, Dr. Lau will discuss your options for correcting your smile. Depending on the extent of your orthodontic issues, you may be a good candidate for clear aligner therapy with Invisalign or ClearCorrect, or you may need to have traditional braces.
