What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral health issue that is causing you pain, discomfort, or bleeding. Accidental dental trauma like chipped, cracked, damaged, loose, and knocked-out teeth all must be treated right away to minimize complications and save the tooth.

However, a number of other issues also qualify as dental emergencies, including:

  • dislodged or loose dental work
  • a persistent or severe toothache
  • gums that are bleeding heavily

When in doubt, schedule an emergency appointment. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

What Should I Do in a Dental Emergency?

Your top priority should be coming into our office. Give us a call to let us know about your issue and to tell us that you’re coming in for emergency care.

If applicable, you can recover your tooth or pulled-out dental work. A knocked-out tooth should be rinsed gently and put into a container of cold milk to keep it moist. Damaged dental work can be put into a plastic bag.

If you have time, you can use gauze or cotton balls to absorb blood, and take an NSAID like ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen to help with pain and inflammation. Ice can be applied to the cheek for pain relief, and to help with swelling. However, these are all temporary fixes so don’t delay. It is crucial that you see the doctor right away to ensure you get the help you need for your dental emergency.

The Importance of Immediate Emergency Dental Care

Getting prompt care ensures that you can save your tooth and avoid further complications. A knocked-out tooth, for example, can only be saved if it’s replaced within 1-2 hours of the injury. If you wait too long to get care, the situation will only get worse.

Emergency dental care also allows you to get relief from your pain and discomfort. A cracked, damaged or infected tooth can cause excruciating pain, and interfere with your day-to-day life. Emergency treatment provides you with relief and gives you peace of mind. After you get treatment, you don’t have to worry about your oral health suffering or any dental issues becoming worse. Come in today for expert care, pain relief, and peace of mind!
